Accessibility

We've done some things to try and make your life easier when using this site and have as far as possible tried to make it accessible. Below you can find what we have done and what is to come. In the meantime if you have any queries you should contact the webmaster by email - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Joomla

The site is powered by the popular Joomla Content Management system which by the developers admission is not fully accessible. However it should be noted that Joomla have a rodmap for increased accessibility. We will be updating this site as the latest stable releases of Joomla are available. Accessibility improvements will therefore occur in parallell with Joomla! The roadmap can be found here (opens in a new window)

Improvements to default / core behaviour of Joomla

  • We have made changes to strip out some of the layout tables used by Joomla but only where we feel this will not compromise security.
  • We have converted all menu items to lists where appropriate and added access keys (see below).
  • The core Template created for the site is 100% CSS driven, validates fully and (although only the shell) meets accessibility requirements
  • The whole site degrades gracefully with styles turned off.
  • We have endeavoured wherever possible that headings are used properly to mark structure

Other acessibility improvements

  • We have ensured there is sufficient contrast between backgrounds and text.
  • All images that do convey text information (we've kept this to a minumum) are set as backgrounds with text hidden from sighted users in place.
  • All images that do not convey text have the alt attribute set. If you come across any we have missed since publication of this document please get in touch - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • The site is usable with client-side scripts such as Javascript turned off.
  • Relative font sizes have been used. You can change the font-size setting

Browser woes

The site has been tested in a variety of browsers and we think we've covered most of them. We've tested it and it displays perfectly in all the modern browsers we tested it in. These were
  • Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 - Windows
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 - Windows
  • Opera 8.5 - Windows
  • Internet Explorer 6 - Windows
  • Konqueror - Linux
  • Firefox - Linux
  • Safari - Mac
  • Firefox - Mac
We tested in the latest version of everything but also in older stand-alone versions of Internet Explorer. In these versions the site functions but may not look exactly as intended. For the sake of your own security we STRONGLY urge you to update to the latest stable version of Internet Explorer. You can download it here (opens in a new window)

We tested in the following versions
  • 5.5
  • 5.01

Screen Resolutions

The site is best viewed on a monitor of 1024 x 768 pixels and up. It will run on an 800 x 600 screen with minimal horizontal scrolling
